What is it about a yacht that inspires such affection, such loyalty, such pride in stewardship? Some members of the H28 Yacht Owners’ Association have owned their H28s for decades – several couples for over forty years. Others are just discovering the joys of ownership. But however long the acquaintance, the H28 brings a smile to your face – whether on the tiller, as a member of the crew, or merely observing one sailing past - there is just something special about this yacht. With her beautiful lines, kindly sea-keeping qualities and strong sense of historical lineage, the H28 has long been a feature of the New Zealand yachting scene. Soon after the Compass H28 went into production, the first generation of owners felt moved to establish an Association which has continued - with enthusiastic participation – through to the present day. And this year, they celebrate their half-century milestone.
The H28 Yacht Owners' Association of New Zealand is proud to announce the publication of a special commemorative book celebrating the 50th anniversary of the H28's introduction to New Zealand's waters, from 1974 to 2024. This book honours the enduring legacy of Herreshoff’s H28 yacht, a vessel that has not only graced New Zealand's seascape with its elegant design but has also forged a tight-knit community of sailing enthusiasts over the past half century.
The upcoming book offers an insightful look into the world of the H28 yacht, featuring:
In celebration of this milestone, the Association will host a gala dinner in August 2024, featuring Grant Mitchell, esteemed boatbuilder from Compass Yachts, and sailing legend Penny Whiting MBE as the guests of honour. The evening promises to be a memorable occasion, filled with stories, tributes, and a shared love for the H28.
From the Foreword by Penny Whiting MBE: "The H28 Yacht Owners Association deserves applause for its unwavering support of sailors in this distinctive class. Their dedication over the past 50 years is a testament to the spirit and passion that the H28 inspires."
Rex Milton, Chairperson of the Association, emphasises the Association's commitment to fostering a supportive and vibrant community for H28 enthusiasts. As he observes, “The Association is family-oriented, and we run fortnightly rallies during the summer. The emphasis is on fun and fostering a harmonious community – with experienced yachties always happy to share their expertise and advice to newcomers.” Rex expresses his excitement for the book launch: “The Association has attracted more than its share of outstanding individuals – I have heard many of the stories over the years, and I am looking forward to reading this very special book.”
