Predicted Log Race
Instructions
Entry
Form and Log
This is not so much a race but rather a rally - a test of seamanship,
navigation, fair play. It is open to any vessel of any size suitable to
safely complete the course under power.
The concept was beloved of the late Ian Ward. Mrs Marge Ward has
generously offered a trophy for this event to be named the Ian Ward
Memorial Trophy.
Entrants will pre-plan their passage along the designated A Division Course, at whatever speed
they wish, and:
- Determine their own departure time at the start line
off Devonport.
- Determine the times of passing each mark when it
first comes abeam.
- Plan to cross the finishing line as close as possible
to 1500
The projected times at each mark are recorded on the Log which is
handed to an on-board Fair Play Observer prior to starting. The Observer
may be a member of the boats crew or even of the skipper's family - the
success of the exercise depends upon his or her integrity.
The AIM is to complete the course passing each mark, and the finish
line, as close as possible to the scheduled times relying only on the
chart, the speed log and the compass and without the benefit of any watch
or clock which will be surrendered to the observer or otherwise obscured.
The Observer will complete the log with the actual times - to the nearest
second - of passing each mark as it first comes abeam and finally when
crossing the finish line.
The differences between the predicted and actual times will be
totalled. The total will be converted to a percentage of the overall
passage time. The boat with the lowest percentage wins.
And of course crews will join the yachties for their BBQ on the beach
in the evening.
If the alternative course to Station Bay is ordered at the start of the
yacht race this will be recorded on the clubs answerphone and Flag O will
be hoisted on the flag staff for the rest of the day.
After
Race:
Prize giving and BBQ on the beach
– everybody welcome.
